Asian Photography Blog

About

I’m a university student living in Singapore.

Photography is my life.

My portfolio can be viewed here.

Living in Asia, I admire the work coming from the West. However, there is a dearth of information regarding the state of photography in Asia. It is difficult to find out more about Asian photographers and their works, except for the few names that we hear so often.

In a region filled with diversity and life, what we know about photography from Asia is predominantly overshadowed by Japan, China and Korea. But what about the other Asian countries? In Singapore, we have a nascent but thriving art/photography community. New art schools are opening, with countless photography majors entering the world but why do we see so little of them? I might be over generalizing but I’m sure this situation is reflected in other countries in the region.

With this blog, I hope to build a platform where such information is readily available. We could all progress together by looking at ourselves, rather than hearing about what others have to say. The talent is out there but no one is discovering them.

Several questions abound: is there such a thing as Asian photography and how do we even define it? Isn’t it a better way to look at things from an Asian perspective? From this, we can then ask ourselves how we can contribute more to the world. I have no straight answers to these questions but do join me on my road of discovery.

Although I’m mostly interested in contemporary art photography and photojournalistic work, I will post any other cool stuff that I chance upon. I promise that I will not go into mindless discussion on equipment or the digital-film debate, as the arguments would be endless.

If you would like to be showcased here, please send a link or pdf (<2mb) to me at info[a]chngyaohong.com. I accept events-listing too.

Every little effort will help make us more prominent in the world. =)

Besides photography and school, he spends his time reading and generally mulling about life. He likes beer too; buy him a pint if you meet him in person. It would make him very, very happy.
