TOP TO BOTTOM, from (“Lightning Fields“)
© Hiroshi Sugimoto, 2009
It’s a small wonder why Sugimoto-san is considered one of the greatest living photographers. He constantly pushes the limits of what photography can achieve and creates works that just leave one in complete awe.
Sugimoto-san approaches photography like a scientist, experimenting and testing out hypotheses. In his latest series, Lightning Fields, he discharged electrical impulses on photographic dry plates to recreate a slice of scientific history in the darkroom.
Visit his website to see more of the series but I believe these works have to be seen in the flash flesh for the full effect.

seeing Hiroshi Sugimoto in Berlinm was a once in a life time experiance!
all the body of his work is out standing
Don’t look like nothing but a bunch of skritch skratch up on that pitcher! Why you call him the best photographer ever? I think that Ann Geddes better than he is.
I think this work is great! What is the subject matter?
wow – some simply stunning photographs!
@rondell i’m sorry that our tastes in photography differ so greatly. the baby pics r nice anyhow.
@allison it’s more of an experiment of what u’d get if u exposed film to electricity. Awesome results eh?
@moonriver @james glad u guys appreciate these works! not wanting to sound like a fan boy but Sugimoto-san is truly amazing.
I’m interested in the process – does he always work with traditional photographic processes?
Stunning results!
Up until recently i had not heard of Sugimoto, but after researching him for a paper i’m glad that i chose him instead of the usual large format photographers that students choose (Alec Soth, Ansel Adams). This series is definitely up there as far as some of my favorite shots of his. The one that really got my attention though was Installation View at Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris, 2004. Words can not describe how that shot inspires me to take better photographs!!
wow??so cool,so beautiful!
Hardly original – Who else thinks this is rather similar to the work of Disinformation “Fire in the Eye” created in 2004 on photographic film and movie film and toured internationally…
