Boredom. Inertia.
Honestly, I’m getting kinda bored just posting photographers’ work I find. What would you, the reader, want to read? The beautiful thing about having a blog is that I don’t have to answer to my publisher or have my agent breathing down my neck just to get new work done. Although I think that the stress would help a little. I’ve built up quite an audience (thanks everyone!) but I would like to write about something more challenging. I’m wondering what else could I do with this space? I want new ideas and I want to hear from you.
Will be going out to shoot the portraits tomorrow. I can’t wait to have them developed!
i want to see your work!
working on it!!
How about interviews w/ contemporary photographers, and guest blog posts about issues that Asian photographers are covering? Would love to see you branching into Asians living in other continents.
I want to hear about Francis Ng, Erica Lai, Ho hui May, Joseph Nair and what Kay Chin is up to.
I’m most interested in the fact that you said that you’re bored with just posting photographs. I’ll throw out a question for discussion, “Why is so much current photography boring?” There seems to be a lack of drama in alot of emerging photographer’s work. Simple composition, pastel color work, bland presentation of the subject matter, employing old technology (plastic cameras, antique emulsion processes, etc), stuck in the snapshot aesthetic. Why is “enigma” the linchpin of description of many photographer’s work. Randy
i agree with an xiao. interview with certain photographers. there is one in singapore who were featured in the Contemporary Magazine Annual issue. interview him and his photo
hmm..interviews would be cool. I’d see what I can come up with.
An Xiao, you have got any ideas on how to get that started? I think it’s good to start branching into that area. I’m quite intrigued!
Ah boy, good list for me to start actually. I guess I have to work on the list of questions first!
Eiffel, are you talking about uncle tay? I haven’t seen him around lately, wonder what he is up to.
Randy, I would need some time to work on that. I believe I do fall into that category sometimes too. Hmm, food for thought.
Hmm let me think about that – drop me an email? I have a few thoughts on how you can branch out. Asian-Americans are a little harder to find in the big pool of American photographers overall :)
why asian american?
why not asian european or australian or middle eastern or antartician?
because that’s where she’s from.
it’d be cool to find one from antarctica.
i can feel your situation. i believe it’s normal.
but, i’m one of your readers and really love your post and especially your dedication for asian photography.
just take a rest, yaohong. or taking photos is a good way also. i’m waiting :)
Well, continue what you are doing. You always surprise me with your finds and I guess the other followers of this blog will agree with me.
Gopal, India.
I want to read about Victorian Peep Boxes that made themselves popular in the mid 1850′s. They were the beginning step that led to the development of the camera – and I want to know more about them. They are discussed in The Advent of Photography in Japan.
Have to say that I love the blog as it is. There isn’t a better place online , or in print for that matter, to discover asian photography. Would be a huge disappointment to lose this. And thank you for all your posts so far…
I wouldn’t mind if a publisher approached me to write a book without a definite deadline!
Yaohong, I think it’s just normal to fall into a rut but sometimes, if you think that you’re getting really board with it some ideas would be good to try like the one’s suggested above. Also, how about guest photographer blogging? I mean you don’t have to always be the one to post. Just have some guidelines and let the photographer speak for themselves, their kind of work, their process, or plans.
You mentioned about your upcoming portrait project, how about telling us something about your subjects? Or how you chose them? What are your impressions during the interview?
Or how about the photographers participants after the SIPF, what are they doing? Projects that they will be doing based on what they have learned?
Or how is it to be a Singaporean photographer? What are the challenges? Influences?
I think, you need a partner for doing this. maybe you find someone else to be your assistent and works together. You make a concept and the assintant being executioner.
About the works, every works you want to upload on your blog must have statement on his work, just e-mail the artist to find his statement on his works.
Yaohong, i would like to add. In my travel blog ,langyaw.com, I usually do series posts and for the current Cebu series, I’m planning to interview two local bloggers and then have them make one guest post each. It’s not only giving them exposure but you also get to plan posts ahead, in case of series, and gives you time to sort of rest from time to time :) Hope this helps.
How about posting your critique of the works instead of just posting the link to their websites?
Cheers, Damien
Maybe some slightly twisted classical to soothe the boredom ;-)
