Defining Asian Photography

I have discovered quite a number of Asian photographers during these past weeks of research. If not for this little pet project, I would not have heard of them or bothered to find out more. Asia is huge; its people diverse and I’ve only barely scraped the tip of the ice berg. However, the selection of who to post and what to feature becomes a highly subjective process.

From wikipedia:

Asia is the world’s largest and most populous continent. It covers 8.6% of the Earth’s total surface area (or 29.4% of its land area) and, with almost 4 billion people, it contains more than 60% of the world’s current human population.

Given its size and diversity, Asia – a toponym dating back to classical antiquity – is more a cultural concept incorporating a number of regions and peoples than a homogeneous physical entity.

So where do I start? And where am I heading with this blog? Frankly, I have no idea. I do not have any predefined agenda, politically or artistically speaking. I just feature stuff that catches my eye, that makes me think and would like to remember for future reference. Having a well-organized blog is a wonderful research tool. It would save me trouble in the future if I need to find any references.

For now, I’m just featuring photographers with Asian descent regardless of education background and physical location. In the future, I plan to put up works by people living/based in Asia. When? I do not know. Perhaps when I get bored or tired with googling and piecing works from all over the net. It’s not an easy feat, I would say.

Looking at the categories so far, I’ve covered 11 countries and I’ve just barely started! It’s exciting to know that so much lies uncovered. I may not be able to find them all (à la Pokemon) but the allure of the undiscovered spurs me on!

It seems like my portfolio is not working on some systems and it’s been bugging me for quite a while. The perils of being an early adopter… If you’re running Flash Player version 9 and the pictures still don’t load, please tell me. I need to find out where the problem lies.

Maybe I should have just stuck to plain HTML.
