Month Old Baby
This baby is officially a month old now! I would like to thank all my readers (that’s you) for your support. Here’s a short report of the foray with emphasis on my methodology and results/findings.
Methodology
I typically spend about two to four hours each day scouring the web for interesting stuff to show. I write at least a post during each sitting. The process isn’t easy as much of the information is hard to access. I would normally work with an artist’s name gleaned off somewhere, google it like there is no tomorrow, dig within the results I find, collate my findings and present them here.
Sometimes it is easy if the person has had exhibitions in the first world where it is the norm to put up a website to publicize the photographer. This would establish some form of web presence and I can work from there. I get really ecstatic if I find a personal portfolio but listings on gallery sites are good too. It’s really quite a commitment but I thoroughly enjoy the entire process. It gives me an opportunity to look at stuff I would have otherwise missed.
Results/Findings
I have covered the following countries so far: Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.
I have not stepped into Central Asia, where I find the most difficulty accessing information as I’m not familiar with that part of the world. I have not covered some parts of Southeast Asia (Philippines and Vietnam), and I would really want to dig out more from my neighboring countries. Finding work from this region is quite an onerous task.
The majority of the photographers I have been looking at are from the Big 3 – China, Japan and Korea; where photography is more established and has gained greater world exposure. It could be related to the relative size of their economies where people have less worries about achieving basic needs and are able to seek self-actualization goals. The works produced are also more in line with the contemporary photography scene in the West.
With that, I am happy that the blog has been warmly received by everyone. I enjoy getting mail from people from halfway round the globe. Do keep them coming! Finally, I hope to uncover more Asian photographers in the future. And ideally, I would like to create a more active exchange with photographers from Asia and perhaps help them get their work out into the world.
Hi,
thank you for all the work you’ve put into the site! I didn’t realise it was so young, I came across it a few weeks ago through the link from Conscientious and I was immediately hooked. It’s proving to be a great resource and education for me as I’m very interested in photography and Asian artists in particular. I’m about to move to Beijing and hope to be working with Chinese photographers while I’m there, so I’ll be keeping an eye on your site for tips!
Congrats to the family for the one month anniversary, and much gratefulness to you for taking the pain and the time to make this site a daily reality for those of us who have an interest in photography and Asia. Your efforts put the 2 together, and out comes a real boon of facts and names to share with us.
Hi Yaohong
You have done up a great and informative photography blog here ! Wonderful links to many different photographers from different countries, serves as an excellent source of learning and appreciation for photography.
Cheers
Jinghui
Hi all, thanks for the comments! It helps to keep me motivated to keep this blog going. Hope that it grows up big and strong. Haha.
Edward: Please do inform me of interesting stuff when you’re in China, ok?
OK yaohong, I can’t promise anything as I don’t know how things are going to work until I’m there but I will try and feed through any good stuff that I come across.
