Soon-Choel Byun

I dig Soon-Choel Byun’s portraits. There’s something about them that makes me wish I could connect to people on that level when shooting them. Byun completed his MFA at the SVA and his BFA at ICP.

An interview in Korean here, would someone be so kind to do some translation on that? (My Korean friend is too busy to help me translate!)

Hmmm. This looks a little too close to ‘photographs of my arty classmates’ for my liking. I think some of the pictures of couples are a bit more substantial.

I think the latter two were for fashion. I guess it’s a little different for me as I don’t really see such work being passed off as fashion here but then again, maybe I don’t flip through enough fashion magazines!

There is a good deal of sexual tension in these images, which the photographer captures with exquisite understatement. A nice juxtaposition, intensity and simplicity.
