In her works Hyun-Jin Kwak examines the issues of culture and sense of belonging. These fabricated moments depict rituals of acceptance, things that girls do to be part of the sisterhood. Presented in dramatic fashion, these images elucidate the fragility of humans, seeking affirmation from others.

Maybe I am wrong, and have not seen enough, but there is so much role-playing when it comes to women in pictures coming from asian photographers. At times, It is both unsettling though certainly interesting. Not sure if you agree or care to comment on that.
Interesting…I can’t say I agree or not because I have not seen enough. But perhaps it could stem from Asian photographers’ response to how women are viewed in Asia generally. And perhaps female photographers tend to be more inward looking, choosing to reflect their inner worlds; whereas male photographers choose to look at the world in general, e.g. politics, issues etc.
Then again, I’m generalizing and gender studies is a very tricky topic.
