I believe that Rinko Kawauchi is one of Japan’s more recognized female photographers. Her dreamy square-format images are delightful and uplifting to look at. She manages to capture beauty in the most mundane in life: an egg, a watermelon, an ant. It’s like looking at the world through a child’s eyes, ever so curious. There seems to be an invisible force of tenderness wrapping around her photos.
I found some images from her latest book, Semear, where she captured the life of Japanese-Brazilian immigrants.

There are some interviews with her over here and here. Images from her book Aila can be found here. Japan-Photo.info also wrote an excellent post on her. More images can be seen here too.
What can I say…she’s really popular!

My wife and I went to Rinko Kawauchi’s opening in NYC on October 11th 2007 at the Cohan and Leslie gallery. We were able to meet her and her publisher Masakazu Takei, and they were both extremely nice and gracious. Her new work was amazingly beautiful. If you are in NYC and happen to be in Chelsea, I highly recommend taking the time to see her prints in the flesh.

I like all of them, but especially Second one(old woman) is the best shot I felt.
