Hanoi is poised to hold Vietnam’s first nude photography exhibition by photographer Thai Phien. It seems like it is causing quite a stir in the country as people grapple with ‘unhealthy’ images in the society.
I cannot gauge the masses’s reaction. In a conservative country like Vietnam expanding so quickly, it may take a while for people to change their mindsets. However, it is a welcome step forward as people open up.
Nudity in art has lasted for centuries, it is a modern affliction that it is considered taboo. I remember climbing the steps of Angkor Wat looking at the bare breasts of the Aspara Dancers carved on the walls. And that was a millenium ago! I doubt that the authorities here would take to this kindly too, what with our strict paternalistic and archaic laws.
