Rina Nakano

In her previous work, Rina Nakano asked strangers if she could listen to their heartbeats while she listened to theirs. In oscillate, sound waves are translated into disorder on a photographic medium.

In this series, the petite photographer repeatedly hit objects, from vegetables to gold glitter, with a pair of drumsticks. The result is a beautiful abstract body of work. Sound may not have been recorded by the medium but the effect can be seen. Chaos and order converge and remerge as a new entity. Enveloped by negative space, the images exude a mysterious allure and power. Ironically, we can only imagine how the physical acts sounded in a vacuum.
